Guide to Determining a Company’s Field of Activity in Estonia

Introduction

When registering a business in Estonia, selecting a primary field of activity is a crucial step. This determination is based on The Estonian Classification of Economic Activities (EMTAK), which provides a structured system for classifying business activities in alignment with international standards.

Selecting a Field of Activity

A company must designate a single primary field of activity when entering business. This should be the activity expected to generate the highest revenue in the first financial year. However, selecting a main field of activity does not restrict the company from engaging in other business activities.

Understanding the Estonian Classification of Economic Activities (EMTAK)

EMTAK follows a hierarchical structure, divided into five levels. The classification process follows a top-down approach, meaning that the field of activity is first determined at the highest classification level and then refined to the most specific level.

This classification system is harmonized with the European Union’s NACE classification, ensuring consistency in economic statistics and allowing for comparative analysis across different EU Member States.

EMTAK Search System

Entrepreneurs can use the EMTAK search tool to identify and verify the appropriate classification for their business activities.

Since EMTAK is aligned with the international NACE system, it also facilitates the interpretation and comparison of economic data across industries and jurisdictions.
